Whats that Mr Homeschool inspector?

You want to see my diary to check the records?

Well, as you can see, the diary is otherwise occupied! And who am I after all to interrupt a war of such proportions? After all, very soon he will probably stop playing this way. Very soon he will no longer see a potential play platform, a mountain, a fort and merely see a boring old diary! How sad.... :-(

The Learning Report.....End of July

ENGLISH

Reading: We have had several extra trips to the library as Zak was a bit of a reading machine the past couple of weeks. He has been enjoying Enid Blyton books and also discovered the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" books. Another favourite was "Granny Adventurer" where granny went off into the rainforest in search of a rare bird. He loved this book and is keen to read more of Granny's adventures! Adem has just started reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid as well after Zaks recommendation. I do not record all their reading as they tend to read a lot during the week, still love picture books as well as the novels and they both love comic books so read a few of them a week too.

Writing: We have not had time for any creative writing in the past couple of weeks, but have written a recount of "Where the Forest meets the Sea" and we re-introduced handwriting books as Zak is needing a bit of practice on his. I bought him a younger years book just to get him printing a bit neater. He does not seem to mind. Adem joined in by doing some from an old book which is all about the human body so he is learning about that at the same time. This week he did the Respitory System. We have been writing lists and explanations in list form.

Reading and comprehension, grammer and vocab as per the norm. (We try to sneak a little in around our theme work. )

Adem did some work on Poetry Terminology, Imagery, similes and metephors. (He is not interested in poetry at all but did this as it was in his text book).

Zak did some out loud reading for mum. (Mum likes a good story!)

Both boys did some spelling activities (we canned spelling tests ages ago but continue to do fun activities to help with spelling, this way of learning works much better for Zak. Adem knows how to spell but does it for fun).

Played "Hang man" and Scrabble.

SCIENCE & HSIE
We started our theme work this term on Environments of the world. We are learning all about the Polar, Rainforest, Tundra, Dessert, Mediterranean and Grassland regions. We are using a book called "Environment and the World" which thus far has been a lot of fun. When we do theme work we try to fit it in with all our other subjects so we are not overdoing the whole "school" thing. I prefer for the boys to seek out as much of their own learning as possible.

Thus far though in this subject we have....

* Identified different regions of the world, found countries on the map and learned which type of animals live there.
*Made up charts of 2 regions each, wrote and drew clothing we would wear there. Which animals live there and drew up a advertisement to try and attract tourists to come visit!
*Put up a map on our whiteboard and put animal stickers in the correct regions (made a colour key to distinguish each region)
*Researched our choice of regions.

Experiments

We planted four different types of seeds in both soil and wet cotton wool to see what would grow quicker. It is day 3 now and the ones in cotton wool are already starting to grow. We also planted some seeds out in the garden a little earlier and they are now just sprouting.

We watched AVATAR (again), and discussed the movie and what we thought of it etc. The boys showed a great understanding of the differences between a natural environment and a "greed" driven materialistic one. They noted the similarities to the real world etc. This was partly what got us interested in doing a theme unit on the environment and world.

CRAFT/ART

Zak built a playground for the rats, and later built a fort for his toys. He has also been drawing a bit. Adem has been creative online.

COMPUTER

Adem has been learning UNITY and 3D modelling. He has been drawing and animating objects and this week moved on to having them interact with each other.

He also spends a bit of time online playing adventure games with friends.

Zak has not really been on the computer much at all lately. He has been too busy.

One interest Zak has discovered is the great old Yugioh tournaments. He went to one with a friend and is now going Yugioh mad again. He is looking forward to the match next week. Last week he won some new cards and a deck holder.

MATHS

Zak: 3D objects, prisms and pyramides, Properties of qualrilaterals, Picture graphs and other types of graphs. Drawing and recording. Tangrams on the new white board.

Adem: Working on Fractions, subraction, multiplication with mixed fractions and whole numbers.

SOCIAL

There has been a lot of playing outside this week, despite the rain. The boys have been up the bush with friends, riding bikes, scooters and building jumps. They also had a sleepover with friends at our house. Went to a birthday party. And we had one outing to the park. Tomorrow we are off to an indoor play centre.

Kinda sounds very schooly when listed like this, but the boys have been doing a lot of self directed learning as well. I just have not followed them around and documented it this past couple of weeks.

A couple of things I do remember Zak doing this week were, making up sentences on the white board with magnets, making tangram pictures, reading loads of books, he even bought home a book he found at an op shop that was all about history. He spent ages reading it and showing me interesting things.

Well thats it for now. I think its time we did some craft! Have a great day! :-)

HEY ALICIA..CRAFT UPDATE JUST FOR YOU..

The cheeky pose is for Alicia who is complaining that I am not blogging enough. Seems she is running out of reading material! Well, Miss Fairy Sparkle, at least I blog more often than you do! But since I am here and all I might as well do a bit of a craft update post hey?

Do you all see the headband I am wearing there? I made it myself! After visiting Ravelry a few times I learned to crochet beyond the square. I have managed to whip up quiet a few little things over the past couple of months. The idea for the headbands came after I made a couple of scarfs in that pattern. I altered it just a little and made it fit. I have since made the same headband four times in different colours.

The scarfs were made as gifts, one for my Aunty Maureen...made in lovely soft Zhivago wool... always a delight to work with........this is her one......

..and one for Barbie, made in soft baby wool, Barbie also got a matching beanie and gloves with hers. The Beanie was from a shell cap design and the gloves I made up myself using the centre pattern from the scarf! I was pretty happy with how they turned out and I think Barbie liked them too! I did not get pictures of the whole set but here are the gloves, the picture does not do the wool justice, its a very soft baby pink with sparkles throught it........

I also made three of this beanie with ear flaps! Made up the whole thing myself..I was on a bit of a roll there......this one is made from Moda Vera wool (very soft and lovely), the other two were made from some lovely blended wool Cameragirl gave me for my birthday, which I doubled up to make thicker one was green and one very similar to this colour........

I made a couple of beanies for myself as well, this one is my favourite, made from Shaun Sheep 100% Australian wool.......

Many thanks to my model Zak here for the pictures....now give it back!!!

I can't seem to find the picture of the other one, I am wondering if my lovely model deleted it! Hmmmm! It was pink and purple in the same sort of wool but I made it in a plain pattern.

Oh well, here is one of my square.......lol...I have been working on this one for a while and pick it up every now and then, its coming along nicely!

I made another little beanie which I will post seperately as I got a little tiny bit fancier with that one. I have also been chugging along with my knitting project, finished the back and one front, halfway through the second front section. This one has been a slight challenge as I am trying to follow a pattern that used 5 ply wool and am using 8ply and smaller needles. It looks good but the armholes caused a slight problem when the front was not matching up to the back. I had to pull it back and work it out myself. I am hoping the sleeves will fit in later! Fingers crossed. xxx

The Back

The pattern up close

And last but not least, I actually got out my cross stitch this week and did a little! Its been a while since I did that. Of course with all that wool around, even a certain young man had to have a go..........

Hope you are all having a lovely week! Hugs and smoochies xoxox

Its play time.......

Yesterday Zak decided that the pet rats needed a bit of entertainment in the way of a new playground. He is forever building little contraptions to keep them amused and this time out did himself. He spent ages trying out different things to see if they would hold together and settled on using really thick sticky tape that is quite strong. As you can see he took into account the need for the girls to have somewhere to hide, somewhere to climb, a tunnel and a bit of leg room too!

Now to convince them that its a nice place to hang out....."look Penelope...look what I made you" ....

"Hmmmm.........let me see.........."

Okay down she goes......(she really is a sticky beak and must check out anything new)...

Sniff Sniff....whats this?

Edie thinks the box is the best part...a place to hide is always good....

Penelope discovers that the box has another side.......like I said...Miss Nosy Parker....

Edie decides to have a turn at the high spot and sees something much more interesting on the table.....

Down she goes......

Now THIS is a nice colourful place to hide...sniff sniff sniff...

Now if you have had enough of looking at rats as cute as they are.....Peanut would like to introduce you to her boyfriend....K...isn't he adorable? Of course she does all the talking, he just listens.....what a clever little boy!

Have a great day everyone! Today we are planning to plant some seeds (a sneaky science experiment you know....to see if seeds grow quicker in water, cottonwool or dirt). Have a great day! Hugs and smoochies xoxoxoxoxxo

Boring Boring...who's been snoring?

Well its that time of year again, when we have to sum up the yearly earnings and send in the tax returns. Sounds simple enough hey? Well actually it is, but for me, well, every three months when it comes time to sum up the book work and send it off to the accountant! I suddenly get the urge to cook! (And garden and knit and crochet and anything else that will get me out of it.)

I know, strange hey? As a rule I don't particularly like to cook, I could think of multiple other things that would be preferable to me so the other day when I found myself in the kitchen trying out several new recipes at once I had to have a giggle at myself. I was thinking "What the hell has gotten into me?" And then in dawned on me...the bookwork! I am totally avoiding the bookwork AGAIN!

Its not like its hard or anything, its just so damned boring and because I refrain from doing it on a daily or even weekly basis, well I have to do three months worth at a time. This time I have managed to avoid it a little longer than normal so pretty much have to get on with it today!

Not that the kids mind, they particularly loved the Coconut, sweet potato and spinach soup AND the apple pastries we had the other day. The only complaint has been that I have not cooked any meat for ages. The carnivores are getting restless!

Im sure my garden thanks me, its all ready for spring planting and I have already planted some seeds in the hope of them being ready in a few weeks to go in the garden. Thus far I have planted English spinach, Silverbeet, Lettuce, tomatoes and Cress. I can't wait to get my garden full and alive again. It has been sorely neglected and missed these past few months.

Anyway time for coffee and a boring morning in the books before hopefully heading out for some friend time! Have a great day everyone!

Mr Slinky returns.........

About a month ago our neighbours from across the road moved away. I don't know where they went but they took their cat who pretty much lived on our front porch as a matter of habit. We came to love him and petted him everyday and were a bit sad when he left. The kids named him Mr Slinky as he loves to wind his way in and out of your legs when you are near him. The owners were not very responsible pet owners to say the least. He was never de-sexed, allowed to run the streets day and night (which is a big no no when living near the bush due to hunting habits) and often like their dog he looked unfed.

Last night we were in for a bit of a surprise when he turned up in his usual spot on his favourite chair all curled up and too tired to even so hello.

This morning he was full of hello's though and demanded a warm welcome! I am not quite sure what to do with him. It was always nice having a cat which I was not really responsible for. I could love him and offer him the occasional treat but the fact that he is not de-sexed and runs the streets was not really my problem. Now I kinda feel like he has chosen us by coming back and am feeling a little put on the spot. He looks as if he has been fed up as he has gained weight but then again he may have been hunting on his journey home, he has a few scars on him as well.

Im not quite sure what to do about him as he can't live out the back, the dogs would eat him, he can't live inside as we have a bird and rats who are often out of their cages. (as he is used to hunting he would kill them for sure!)

For now we are content with just giving him some love, some food and maybe a collar with a bell? Perhaps the owners will come looking for him but I doubt it. We shall see! He is a most beautiful boy though........don't you think?

Cheeky rats....

(Penelope eating a cheezel)

Remember not so long ago I told you about TC's new baby rats? Well, sadly Sophia the little albino rat did not live very long. She had severe repository problems and only lived for a few weeks.

(Sophia when she was sick, I got to baby sit while her mama went to work!)

After she died TC decided to get another baby rat to keep Penelope company and for warmth when snuggling to sleep. Along came Edie who was only 4 weeks old and probably a little too young to be away from her mama.

At first she could not hang on properly with her feet, was not using her tail to balance and was constantly looking for milk much to Penelopes disgust as she was not a whole lot older herself. Thankfully though, Edie is a little fighter and eats really well and she is quickly growing into an adventurous young lady with quite an attitude. Just check this picture out that Barbie took the other day, does it remind you of anyone around here? hehe?

Lucky I like rats hey? Both of the girls like to run all over me and give me kisses! They are so sweet! Penelope was pretty little herself but she did a great job of teaching Edie to eat and making her sleep at nap time. She would sit on her to keep her still, she took it quite seriously!

Anyway thats it from me today! Have a good weekend! Hugs and smoochies xoxoxox

Our latest learning endeavours!

Thought I better do a quick catch up on what we have been learning. I have been a little remiss in jotting it down in my diary this past month or so, so thought I'd sum it up here.

Above: Remembering to stop and breathe, right between taboganning, rock climbing......and horse riding! All in one day!

Maths: A has been working on Fractions of all sorts. (Highschool level) He does lessons on Maths Online which we are finding really helpful at the moment. There is a video teaching each lesson and then he does a worksheet and keys in his answers. If he gets any wrong he has to work them out again and key in the right ones. Each week I get a report from the site telling me how he went.

Z has been working with digital time, calenders, distances km etc, map reading, some fractions and more recently prisms and identifying shapes of objects if they are cut up.

Of course we also do a lot of practical maths such as real map reading, working out distances, costs, measuring with tape measures and rulers, weighing and measuring with cooking, playing monopoly, cards, and other games requiring problem solving (;-) You know, the learning you do when you don't know you are learning kind of stuff!)

English:

The usual stuff here, grammar, vocabulary, reading, comprehension, spelling activities. A lot of our English is usually incorporated into HSIE or Science rather than doing them seperately.

We have been reading and watching movies around Fantasy themes and identifying fact or fiction. So if they watch a film or show, I will ask them what they thought it was and then we will discuss why and how they came to their conclusions. Both boys are not keen on writing so I have been trying to encourage a little more of that without getting too fussy. Don't want to scare them off completely. Zak has had a go at making up some funny poems although he does not want to write them down as yet.

(Maths and English are the only subjects I absolutely insist on doing daily. It is not always bookwork but often practical but we do try to fit some in as a rule. The rest of the boys learning I try to give them free reign, having said that Adem is very lazy and needs a push so I do set work for him to get him moving along. Often we just follow Zaks lead and go from there which is where theme work comes in handy!)

HSIE :

Australia: We did some reading and comprehension on the treatment of Indiginous peoples of Australia in the past.

Ancient Egypt: We did a whole unit of study on Ancient Egypt which came about as we were reading the Ulysses Moore series of books. In the first book the children travel to Ancient Egypt so that was our lead. We read lots of books, watched programs, played Khufu (the mummy dvd game), Incorporated it into our artworks, fiction reading and cooking etc. Also regardless of what country we are learning about we always pull out the globe or the Atlas to see where the country is and how far it is from Australia etc.

Family: We took a short holiday with our extended family and all lived together in one house. Zak spent a lot of time fishing with his Grand dad and uncle and visiting museums etc. Spent loads of time reading maps and planning daily adventures.

We watched several episodes of "The super Nanny" have you ever seen that show? It had us in hysterics, no offense to anyones parenting views but while I don't agree with a lot of the super nannies ideas, I could see why the parents in these shows needed it. My goodness! Of course my lot found it hysterical and ran around for the next week telling each other "that is not asseptable! Get in the norty chair!" I must admit I even had a go when I told Zak that the state of his bedroom was really not acceptable and he should do something about it...before either of us could move, two of his sisters popped out from nowhere and fingers pointing at him "that is NOT asseptable! " It was quite funny! (Now how is this learning you ask? Well, it was good for the kids to see how other people live, discipline or don't discipline their children and we spent ages discussing our thoughts on the methods used in the show, the behaviours of the children and parents and my kids got to see one of my theories proven, being that children eating nothing but crap go nuts! Interestingly enough the idea of implementing some sort of timetable is looking favourable at our house as a result!)

WW2: We did some reading on world war 2 and what it was like to live in Britain at the time of the Blitz. On our holiday Zak had fun checking out some old bunkers left standing on a mountain from ww2, he spent ages climbing through them and having a ball playing armies.

He also enjoyed visiting a small maritime museum and was quite fascinated with all the "old" stuff! He especially loved an old calculator that was huge!

Science:

The Natural Environment: We went to Oakvale farm! Got up close and personal with loads of baby animals and fed them. There was also lots of Australian animals and a reptile display. We took lots of pictures which I will blog when I have more time. Went for a tractor ride.

Zak learned to fish, also identifying different fish in the lake. Took a walk along the lake and read all the signs about different plants along the way.

Gardening: Zak made a cactus garden (again LOL) There was a slight accident with the last one. Mr Yakka thought it would make a nice step when he was trying to reach my pegs and tipped the lot out. Barbies mum and dad came to the rescue and gifted Zak a whole bunch of new cacti and succulents so he planted them all and now wants a larger portion of real garden out the back to plant them in. (we are getting to that in the next few weeks hopefully if the rain lets up!)

We have been trying to dig out all the grass out the back before spring so we can plant more vegies and herbs this year. We did manage to find some lovely seedlings popping up when we cleared the vegie patch the other day, tansy, marigolds, basil, parsley and some catnip.

The Human Body: We made models of the human eye and learned each part. Adem sat and taught Zak using a manual and printouts and then they each put together their eyes.

Documentaries: Zak especially watched lots, Adem only a few. They watched a few about the environment, one about dangerous animals and one called Sleek Geeks which was all experiments etc. They liked that one.

Vehicles: Went car shopping, Zak helped. Checked out all the different types of cars and learned first hand what shonky people car dealers are! Yes we did buy a car but it was a pain in the butt! Also checked out lots of boats at the Marina at Nelsons Bay!

Cooking: We did several cooking classes using different ingredients etc. Do you know what happens if you add bi-carb instead of corn flour to a satay dish? It kind of explodes! LOL Very funny though! Messy too! Woops!

We did do some science bookwork too, but I can't remember what it involved off the top of my head.

Creative Arts:

Music: We have been a little lax with any formal lessons but have been having the usual fun with Rock Band which in a sense is music. The kids have to follow the notes and sing and make a lot of noise. To add to this we got the Dancing game for the Wii and Zak has been dancing up a storm. They also got one of those paper jamz toys! (I don't like it, its noisy and annoying as it does not plug in so somebody keeps following mama around the house with his noise! One guess who?) One can pick out tunes on it though. After I complained a bit he picked up the real guitar and started picking out Smoke on the water. I think its time he learned a new song.

Drums have been on the back burner a bit lately, but he has had a bit of a bang on them from time to time. Zak has been playing the keyboard a bit as well.

Art/craft: Painting on canvas, drawing using guides to learn to draw properly as well as free style drawing, drawings with pastels (chalks and crayons), a bit of scrap booking, plaster painting, egyptian pectorals (plaster, cutting, painting and beading), photography, sewing, knitting. (A does not do a whole lot of this but Z takes to it all with gusto! He also like to make his own craft projects often out of scraps and bits and pieces. He made some tubes and climbing toys for the rats. He has also made several knives out of wood, a couple of bow and arrow sets and swords).

PDHP: Dancing, Bike Riding, Riding Scooters, Walking, Climbed a Mountain ( -every which way and back again! Ouch mama had sore legs for a week!) Horse riding, taboganning, Z did rock wall climbing), fishing , trampolining and karate. Kids HQ, sat up at ungodly hours to watch Australia play in the World cup!

Computer: (ahem, this is where we will find Adem most of the time.) He has been learning various programming but tends to get fed up with it quickly. He has learned quite a bit with 3D modelling and is getting good at that. He tends to enjoy more so online adventure games and talking to his friend Jacob who also homeschools and likes to get on the computer a lot too! Adem certainly knows his way around a computer and often helps me or the girls if we have a problem. He can set up a new machine by himself, work out whats wrong a lot of the time and fix it. We are trying to encourage him to do a little more in the programming side, even make up his own games rather than just playing them all the time. He tends to lose track of time if left to himself so we are working on getting him outside a bit more. Zak also like the computer but he will only play for a little while and then seeks out more adventurous play! He would rather be wielding a real sword than a virtual one any day!

Social: We have had several outings with homeschool group. A couple of parties. Lots of family visits.

We did lots of other stuff too but I think this is enough for anyone to read in one go! Must try to do this weekly! Have a great week everyone!

Hugs and smoochies xoxoxox

Sorry! I AM alive and well!

It has been bought to my attention that I have anti-social in cyber land for just a little longer than normal. Sorry, I have just not had the time to get online long enough. I have read the occasional blog post but not caught up on the long list in my reader. I have looked at facebook a couple of times but mostly only when someone has written something on my wall so it sent me an email.

We have had a busy few weeks since our trip, with a visit from my little sister from Melbourne, a birthday or two. TBF turned 20 last weekend and Barbie had her 18th. Its been cold and rainy and quite frankly I would like nothing better than to go to sleep and wake up in Spring! Oh how I am looking forward to spring! The house decluttering has come to a stand still with all the other things to do and is driving me insane just thinking about it. I want it done yesterday!

We have been trying to get some sort of regularity going with our local homeschool group and personally I am trying to get back into some sort of routine as I feel like we are just floating around not getting a whole lot done lately. We have had two lovely group outings this past couple of weeks. One big meet up with two groups at the park which was so nice catching up with friends we have not seen in a while. (Many who were met through blogging or online forums :-)) and this week a smaller gathering at my friends house where we roasted apples and damper in an outdoor fire. The kids had a great time building the fire (in the rain I might add) and cooking up a storm. Peanut came along with me and we had nice warm cuddles and yummy cakes (well I had the cakes, she is still a bit little for those).

Other than that, I have been crocheting and knitting as usual. I am getting to the stage where my fingers are itching to do some cross stitching but I don't have time. I am loving the small crochet projects as they are so quick to make. I have made a couple of scarfs as gifts and some gloves and about five hats. I got pictures of a couple but not all. Will try and post some later.

Anyway I have loads to do today so I hope all is well in your part of the world. I will try and catch up more soon.
