A couple of years ago, my garden stopped growing the way it used to. Things although carefully planted, failed to thrive. Even with a live in garden helper to take the load off of me, who seemed to know a lot more about gardening than I did, saw many of my plants dying or wilting and in the end it was left alone for a very long time.
I remember saying to my man one day. I just don't know what's wrong. Nothing wants to grow anymore. Not like that first year when everything grew so wonderfully and in abundance. I just don't know what it is that is missing. He looked at me and raised his eyebrows and said "YOU! Its missing you!"
In hindsight, I had to agree. My garden was built with great intention and loads of love. Sometimes I tended it, sometimes I did not but it was always a source of great joy when I did so. My total lack of attention by handing it over to someone else was obvious. When that someone was not there any more it became even more neglected and sad. My lemon tree in particular failed to produce lemons for years!
Now, as most of you know I have been either away galavanting or very sick for much of the past 5 months or so. So the thought of starting over was rather daunting. It took a bit of work to finally get off my butt and do something about it and now..........well now........just see for yourself........
Now just like my first garden, things are planted willy nilly, with no order as a novice gardener might plant them.......
Or as they might plant themselves......... Herbs, fruit and vegies growing together....
Complimenting each other, or just fighting for space :-)
Somehow, working together as Mother Nature intended........
In pure ignorant bliss of how things "should be"!!!
Some potatoes choose to grow in the baskets I build them......
And some choose not to........prefering to sprawl themselves "outside the basket" if you please......
And other plants just choose to co-exist, side by side, regardless of species.....
Because, my friends......... where there is LOVE......
And where there is LIGHT........
There is LIFE........
And that lemon tree I mentioned........well, its full to the brim with lemons! Go figure! And the lemon balm, like most of my other herbs, seems to be having a growth spurt too......
Whats growing in your garden right now?
Hugs and smoochies xoxoxox

Not a darned thing. So envious of your garden... My black thumb will get a workout come spring though. For some unknown reason, I never stop trying with this stuff.
ReplyDeleteWe just planted cos lettuce, one tomato plant, Thai basil, capsicum and chilli. But tomato plants are sprouting up in the vegie garden from the compost we put there when we moved in.
ReplyDeleteYour garden looks so lush, and what a lovely post.
Not much! I'll have to post a photo of the pathetic herbs in a pot I attempt to grow. One day I'll have a vege garden!
ReplyDeleteI think nature needs to take breaks every now and then too - especially trees.
ReplyDeleteHowever, you are correct. Just a little love goes a long way!
So glad you and your garden are thriving together again!
ReplyDeleteMy garden is growing snow at the moment, lots of snow. And my sweet but rotten puppy has again decided that the baby lilac is really yummy....that's the project for the day, to try to save it from her.
Sayre: I think its much harder to grow things in pots. You really need to make sure they get lots of water and attention or they shrivel rather quickly.
ReplyDeleteFoxy: See that tomato right at the top? It grew itself, so did the succulents under it, I think they broke off from a larger plant it was sitting near and just got on with it. Its fun when things grow all by themselves hey? You never quite know what you will get. We also have catnip, basil (purple and green), tansy and other tomatoes popping up in odd places.
Ingi: Plant your herbs in the ground, they will grow much better. :-) Herbs are the easiest thing to grow.
Karmyn: Yes I agree with nature needing a rest too and that it be left to thrive a little wildly rather than be tamed to perfection,
Puppysitter: Snow already? wow! Don't think I could handle that much cold. LOL Your puppy must be a big girl by now. You just reminded me of the time Miko ate the curry plant when she was a puppy. Geez she was a smelly girl for a while there. Haha!
Oh Karisma, your garden is lovely!! It is so amazing to watch your growing season as we get towards the end of fall. I just love it all.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with Karen. These are the things that get me through the long New England winters....
ReplyDeleteIt is so amazing what you can do isn't it? and what a great feling to serve up food on plates with love that were tended to with love. We have spuds, lettuce, carrots and silverbeet at the moment. Our chooks are still laying eggs (two of them) and we have had three sets of twin kids born in the past two weeks :)
ReplyDeleteWell it certainly is clear that your garden was surely missing your love and your green thumb! It looks as though it is thriving!
ReplyDeletebeautiful! And the garden, too!
ReplyDeleteYou have a wonderful garden:-)
